THE BEAST IN ME- song meaning

The beast in me
Is caged by frail and fragile bars
Restless by day
And by night rants and rages at the stars
God help the beast in me

The beast in me
Has to learn to live with pain
And how to shelter from the rain
And in the twinkling of an eye
Might have to be restrained
God help the beast in me

Sometimes it tries to kid me
That it’s a teddy bear
And even somehow manage to vanish in the air
And that is when I must beware
Of the beast in me that everybody knows
They’ve seen him dressed in my clothes
Patently unclear
If it’s New York or New Year
God help the beast in me
The beast in me

Listening to this song for the first time was all it took to make me realize that this song has a strong and powerful message for everyone out there trying to live the good in him while battling with the evil.

The song, famously known by the version of Johnny Cash was actually written by Nick Lowe who is the son-in-law of Cash. Nick wrote it for Cash as a view on Johnny Cash’s drug abuse.

This song is about the addiction that we all have that drives us to do evil.

The BEAST can be anything- Drugs, Sex, Anger, Violence, etc. In this song it mainly refers to the SIN that lives in each one of us. Lowe explains how our control over our sin is weak and can be triggered by the slightest events

“Is caged by frail and fragile bars
Restless by day
And by night rants and rages at the stars”

The devil who is the cause of all sin is subtle and clever, He tries to convince you that what you’re about to do isn’t really dangerous. And he knows the timing of all acts, he hides himself and knows exactly when to strike, when we are at our weakest. This song reminds us that we must always be aware of this and be at our guard from the “beast”

“Sometimes it tries to kid me that it’s a teddy bear
And even somehow manage to vanish in the air
And that is when I must beware
Of the beast in me”

I couldn’t agree more with Nick Lowe on this song. It is a struggling time for everyone in today’s world and the frustration and failures often lead us to the control of the beast and end up living in sin. I applaud people like Lowe who give me inspiration, through the songs they write, to live a better life. And the only way in which we can conquer this beast is if we have God on our side.

“God help the beast in me”
